Horses as Pets

Horse Woes
PETA favors horse rescue and opposes horse breeding. Horses are often acquired frivolously and then are neglected and cruelly treated. Many horses are either lonely and bored or lonely and overworked. Because many horses are boarded and spend much of their lives away from their owners' watchful eyes, there is an enormous opportunity for abuse by uncaring or untrained stable personnel. Horse breeding has caused the same overpopulation problem that plagues dogs and cats, and many horses who end up at slaughterhouses are former "pets." Once adopted, horses should never be sold or given away; it is virtually impossible to know where they will ultimately end up.
